Driving tips

Bring your license

Carry a valid license. A valid foreign license can be used for up to 90 days from arrival (RA 4136). Some rental companies also ask for an IDP.

Number coding in Manila

On MMDA roads, cars are banned on one weekday by last plate digit, 7–10 AM and 5–8 PM (Makati: 7 AM–7 PM). No coding on weekends and holidays. Ask your supplier about your car’s coding day.

Expect traffic

EDSA and airport roads get heavy at rush hour. Leave extra time when heading to NAIA.

RFID for tolls

Since March 2025, toll expressways are cashless and need a valid Autosweep or Easytrip RFID sticker (TRB). Check that your rental car has both, with load.

FAQ

What license do I need to drive in the Philippines?

Filipinos can use a valid Philippine driver’s license. Rental suppliers set their own requirements, so check the rental terms on Klook before you book.

Can foreigners or balikbayans with a foreign license drive?

Under the Land Transportation and Traffic Code (RA 4136, Sec. 21), tourists with a valid license from their home country may drive for up to 90 days from arrival; after that you need a Philippine license from the LTO. If your license isn’t in English, bring an official English translation. Rental companies set their own rules and some ask for an International Driving Permit.

Is it better to rent a car or book a transfer from NAIA?

If you are staying in Metro Manila, a private transfer is usually less stressful than driving in traffic. A rental makes more sense for road trips outside the city.

Are tolls and fuel included in a transfer?

Not always. Some NAIA transfers say tolls are paid to the driver in cash. Check each listing’s details.
